The Kalanchoe Delagoensis, commonly known as "Mother of Millions," is a fascinating and unique succulent native to Madagascar. This striking plant is celebrated for its unusual appearance and an almost relentless ability to reproduce, earning it its fitting name. Its upright, fleshy, and narrow leaves are a grayish-green with distinctive reddish-brown spots, giving it a prehistoric or sculptural aesthetic. The plant's most notable feature is the tiny plantlets, or bulbils, that form along the scalloped edges of its leaves, which can fall off and root on their own, creating an unending supply of new plants. This prolific propagation ability makes it both a rewarding houseplant and a potentially invasive species in warm climates.

Growing Tips

  • Light: Mother of Millions thrives in bright light. For indoor plants, a south-facing window is ideal. While it enjoys a few hours of direct sunlight, protect it from intense, scorching afternoon sun, which can cause leaf burn. Inadequate light can lead to a leggy, stretched appearance with widely spaced leaves.

  • Watering: Like most succulents, this plant is drought-tolerant and susceptible to root rot from overwatering. The "soak and dry" method is best. Water the plant thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain out, and then let the soil dry out completely before watering again. Reduce watering significantly during its summer dormancy period.

  • Temperature & Humidity: This succulent prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 60°F and 85°F (18°C to 29°C). It is not frost-tolerant and must be brought indoors when temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C). It is adaptable to a wide range of humidity levels but generally thrives in average indoor humidity.

  • Pruning: You can prune your Mother of Millions to maintain its shape and encourage a fuller appearance. Use clean, sharp tools to cut back any leggy or unhealthy growth.

Soil Preparation

The key to a happy Kalanchoe Delagoensis is excellent drainage. The plant's roots are highly intolerant of prolonged moisture.

  • Indoor Potting Mix: A specialized cactus and succulent potting mix is perfect. You can also create your own by mixing regular potting soil with gritty materials like perlite, coarse sand, or pumice. A good ratio is 50% potting soil and 50% cactus mix, or even a mix of 2 parts potting soil with 1 part perlite and 1 part fine orchid bark.

  • Container: Always use a pot with a drainage hole to prevent water from sitting in the bottom and causing root rot. Terracotta pots are a great choice as they allow excess moisture to evaporate through their porous walls.

Propagation

The Mother of Millions is famous for its effortless propagation. There are two primary methods:

  1. From Plantlets (Most Common): The tiny plantlets that form on the leaf edges are self-contained "baby plants" with their own roots. They will naturally fall off the parent plant and root in any nearby soil. You can simply collect these plantlets and place them on the surface of a well-draining soil mix. They will quickly take root and grow.

  2. From Cuttings: You can also propagate the plant from a stem cutting. Using a sterile knife or scissors, cut a segment of the stem. Allow the cutting to "callous over" for a few days to a week. This process seals the wound and prevents rot. Once calloused, plant the cutting in a well-draining soil mix. Do not water immediately; wait for a few weeks until it has established roots, then resume a normal watering schedule.

Important Note on Toxicity

It is crucial to note that all parts of the Kalanchoe Delagoensis plant are toxic if ingested. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking
Color: Green/Black
I love this watch despite the fact that it is really a toy. I love the look of the watch, I love how lite the weight of the watch is on my wrist, and it really does keep good time if you manage the solar charge properly. Other than looking cool on your wrist, this watch has absolutely no functions other than time keeping. The black plastic bezel is molded into the case and does not turn, so don't plan on using that. The watch has no light, the dial numbers are non-luminous and the hands are very limited in terms of luminosity. No buttons. All you can do is adjust the time and date by pulling out what used to be a winding stem in the good old days. The small tag on the strap with Geographic coordinates shown on it indicate the location of the old Timex manufacturing facility (SW of Waterbury, CT). I have a nice ledge at my bedroom window and it gets good western sun for a good part of the day regardless of the time of year. On this ledge you will find a half dozen solar powered watches (mostly Casio) properly aligned to maximize the charge they may receive each day. Note that the description for this Timex watch specifically states that a lightbulb won't charge this watch. You need direct sunlight for several hours if you want to get more than a 3-week charge into this watch. So, I'll leave you with a couple of tips, my friends; 1.) If you are looking for a first watch to give your outdoorsy oriented Son or Daughter, then give them this one. Why? Because it is cool looking, fairly well built, and it actually works, 2.) After you receive your Timex watch, be sure to keep the display mount it is packaged with. It makes a great fixture to mount your watch on for charging and allows you to maximize the position of the solar cells on the dial so that you can optimize charging time. Have Fun! Jimmy

Excellent value, flawless performance for well over a year and no signs of quitting.
Color: Green/Black
Excellent value, had this for well over a year and it still keeps perfect time, still water resistant. No worries about having to change batteries. Owned a fancy expensive (battery) watch once and the dept. store repair intentionally sabotaged the watch in the hopes I would purchase another from them. Yeah, good luck with that, lost my business forever. This is the 21st century, cell phones are the new time pieces, but solar is totally reliable and Timex makes it happen. Holds a charge for many months, although I prop it in a bright window for a few days every few months or so just to make sure the cells are always fully charged, although it's probably unnecessary, just being over cautious. I haven't actually experienced this watch ever running out of power even after months of use. Damn impressive, as it should be.

Good value for solar watch
Color: Black/Orange
Nice watch! It is plastic like but it is solar. No indiglo button only a little luminous on the hands so you don't want to wear it in tje dark and expect to check the time. 45mm case is good size for my wrist and the band works good also, Not too long not too short. Overall a good watch with no problems
